Pi in the Sky, launching a Raspberry Pi into space on a Weather Balloon

Wed 17 May, 2017

On Tuesday 2nd May, students launched a Raspberry Pi computer 35,000 metres into the stratosphere as part of an Employer-Led project at UTC Oxfordshire titled ‘Pi in the Sky’, set by the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

Pi in the Sky Launch Day

On launch day the Pi in the Sky Raspberry Pi and weather balloon set of from our college, UTC Oxfordshire. Throughout the launch I was filiming everything that was going on from people to setting up the weather balloon to the people watching us do it! Once we finally launched it, we got in a van and chased it around from the ground as it gained alitude. When the balloon poped we quickly followed it to the predicted landing and tracked its location to the actual landing – a massive field – where we hunted though the long grass for it.

I filmed, edited and produced this video to promote the school and Pi in the Sky. As part of the communications team for Pi in the Sky, I ran the social media accounts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for the project. Once the video was created and uploaded to YouTube, I published the link to Twitter and the projects other social media accounts. On Twitter, the Raspberry Pi Foundation retweeted the video, and so it was shared with their account’s 845K followers. This further helped the growth of the video to the public. Find out more about me and my video work.

Since the Pi in the Sky was launched, the video has been used to promote UTC Oxfordshire to potential students as a fun employer-led project as part of the school.
